Guru Amar Das Ji blessed this beautiful soul, lady Mai Sevan with one of the cots (manjee). She used to live in Kabul, Afghanistan. She heard of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj Ji, and came to Punjab, India. The Divine light was operating through the third appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Goindwal Sahib, and this well was being dug where you could climb down 84 steps to the water in the well. She became so busy in that service and meditated day and night. She did simran and seva with such devotion, and was blessed with such powers that even though she was in Goindwal Sahib in Punjab, she had left behind a very small baby in Kabul; she would put her baby in a bhangoorhaa (cradle), and then swing that with her spiritual power, sitting more than a thousand kilometers away. Maharaj Ji became so pleased with her that He blessed her with one cot (manjee), and gave her the responsibility to help the people walk this path of life in the area of Kabul.
Ji, when we have problems, we should try to find solutions and not turn our face away from them. In these western countries, one of the factors that causes stress to mothers - it is a big responsibility to raise children and work at the same time. While this is challenging, this role of a mother is the most precious role in human life. Leaving aside a few, most people who have been successful in life, their mothers had a direct or indirect role to play in their success. My daughters who are mothers of small children, I want to say that this is a precious experience. Many years ago, we read a dhaarnaa:
ਤੇਰਾ ਮਾਵਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਰੋਹਬ
tayraa maavaaN vaalaa robh
On one hand the mother’s loves so much, but her robh (authority) is very powerful too; because she has earned that robh. I feel like sharing a couple stories.
We know about Heinz ketchup. The gentleman who found Heinz ketchup, his name was Henry Heinz. He established a very successful business. When he passed away, his will was read, in which he says:
I desire to set forth at the very beginning of my will as the most important item in it, confession of my faith in God as my savior. Also desire to dare witness to the fact that throughout my life, in which there were unusual joys and sorrows, I have been wonderfully sustained by my faith in God. This legacy was left to me by my mother, a woman of strong faith, and to it I attribute every success I have attained.
Thomas Edison, whose teachers sent him home with a slip that he is foolish and cannot learn anything; we cannot keep him at school. His mother said he is not foolish, I will teach him. We have seen that he invented the electric bulb which lightens up the whole world. He had over one thousand inventions. Thomas Edison said: I did not have my mother for long but she cast over me an influence which has lasted all my life. The good effects of her early training, I can never lose.If it had not been for her appreciation and her faith in me at a critical time in my life, I would never likely have become an inventor. I was always a careless boy, and with a mother of a different mental caliber, I would have turned out badly. But her firmness, her sweetness, her goodness were potent powers to keep me on the right path. My mother was the making of me.
My daughters who are mothers of little children, we all should appreciate them. Dear daughters, you should be thankful to God that He passed you through this life experience. Please be careful; these years are going to pass by very quickly. Enjoy these years and make sure the children are rooted in a beautiful place.

He says if your nature is not changing, if you are not being transformed from a mental, stubborn consciousness, to more loving, fluid consciousness then nothing really is happening.
sachahu orai sabh ko upar sach aachaar.
He says the highest thing that can happen in one’s life, in this world, is to become united with God. And yet higher than that, is to live in the nature of God, which is of our true self.
taidee bandas mai ko-ay na dithaa too naanak man bhaanaa.
Oh, my Beloved, the way you stop my running, wandering consciousness in Your presence, I have not met anybody in this world who can do that - to stop my consciousness, my mind from wandering around. Because of this, I’m in ishq with You!
ghol ghumaa-ee tis mitar vicholay jai mil kant pachhaanaa.
I’m forever a sacrifice to the meditator, the True Guru, who told me how to recognize Your presence within.
With closed eyes, while mathaa tayking in front of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and staying there, let’s become focused at Him.
While becoming connected with Guru Granth Sahib Ji, please feel the sense of gratitude: Because of You, oh my Beloved, I have met the lord of the universe.
Please, tell him, shukraanaa, I’m so grateful, I’m so grateful, I’m so grateful, I’m so grateful, I’m so grateful, I’m so grateful, shukraanaa, shukraanaa, shukraanaa.
ghol ghumaa-ee tis mitar vicholay jai mil kant pachhaanaa.
Now please come where you are sitting, and feel the presence of the Divine within; so powerful, much more than we ever experienced. Feel that some power is rising upward in the street of the present.
shukraanaa…….shukraanaa…….shukraana……shukraanaa……..shukraanaa
Why are we feeling the Divine so powerfully? Because the power of gratitude is more than ishq. Please understand this now. Yogis focus themselves, do everything themselves. Up to now, even we have been doing it ourselves but now the story is going to change. It could not have changed earlier because we would not have understood it. Even we were doing everything ourselves; it could not have been different in the beginning.
gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o.
Maharaj Ji says sing (gaavee-ai) and hear (sunee-ai). What is the next step? The next step is just hearing; He says now stop singing, just hear (sunee-ai). Singing means to do something, active energy; we do something and then we feel Him. We focus (Dhi-aan) and then we feel Him - this is ishq; doing something. On the other hand, one just lays at His doorstep and is grateful that You are coming to my home; we are not doing anything, it’s just a feeling that I did not find You; You came and made me feel You, and I am so grateful (shukraanaa). This is very subtle. Please grasp this. It must be recognized at this stage. I did not find You by bringing my focus (Dhi-aan) here; You brought my Dhi-aan here, You made me feel You - passive energy, In passive energy, we are ready to receive. When we understand that I focus my consciousness and feel the Divine, the consciousness is not ready to receive; the consciousness is attuned to doing something. He is pleased with the consciousness that is ready to receive. Sikh means one who receives the advice, not the one who says I can do it all on my own. One more thing; Maharaj Ji says:
ਆਪੇ ਵੈਦੁ ਆਪਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ॥
aapay vaid aap naaraa-in.
He says, let me do the operation, you just be the patient. All the instruments are here, you can do it yourself too but you won’t go too far with that; your ego will remain. Don’t try to cure yourself; you cannot cure yourself. Just be the patient, let me be the physician.
One has to speak in order to sing; hearing does not require doing anything. To sing is to do ishq, hearing is to be grateful. Open the doors to receiving; hearing at the ears or at the heart, open the doors to receive the Divine - this is being grateful. Gratitude will arise out of the consciousness that feels I haven’t done anything, You have done everything. That’s why Yogis become more and more egoistic; the belief that I did this becomes strong in them, while Maharaj Ji says that the consciousness should be in a receiving mode, not in a doing mode.
suntay puneet kahtay pavit satgur rahi-aa bharpooray.
Look at this! He says that through singing you can become pure, but through hearing you can become holy! Through doing ishq, we can become pure, but through becoming, and remaining in a grateful state of consciousness, we become holy.
If we only do ishq, ego will remain that I loved you so much. The other way - You made me feel You, You taught me how to do ishq, You put ishq in me. In Moolmantar, He said the story ends with Gurparsaad (Guru’s grace). Before that He said Kartaa Purakh - let Him be the Kartaa Purakh (the doer), you be the Sikh, be the patient - do not become the physician. If we have grateful consciousness, the consciousness of a patient, then ishq can reach its peak. If we do ishq and the consciousness is not grateful, we won’t be able to go beyond a certain point. When we have grateful consciousness, the Divine operates in so many beautiful ways with us - as a friend, as a mother, and so on.
Dhaarnaa: (at 45:53)
misaal hovay jo sabh muhabataaN dee…..oh muhabat banan noo jee kardaa
mainoo lorh nahee jag dee-aaN shouhrataaN dee….tayray naal turan noo jee kardaa
I don’t care whether the world accepts me or not; I hardly care, that’s their world. I just want to walk with you, I just want to say, let’s go to our Beloved, let’s realize our true selves.
Dhaarnaa (end)
We must understand the power of gratitude. Let alone for the blessings, the worldly blessings, you have blessed me with, I cannot even see beyond this blessing that you are running my breathing system, my heart, my pulse, my kidneys, you are keeping me alive so that I can feel you, I can be with you, I can celebrate my true self.
Humility arises out of the consciousness that is grateful, and our words become humble; our words become merciful and compassionate like the Divine.
Dhaarnaa:

If you want to become fragrant in this garden of his, then smile, not only tolerate the
thorns, smile at them, play with them.
