ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

॥ ਜਪੁ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥  ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥

With closed eyes, let us become focused at the mansion of the Divine, either at the heart area, navel point, or in between the eyebrows or at the top of the head - Maharaj Ji calls it the dasam du-aar ot the Tenth Gate.

ਖੂਬੁ ਖੂਬੁ ਖੂਬੁ ਖੂਬੁ ਖੂਬੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਮੁ

khoob khoob khoob khoob khoob tayro naam.

Oh, my Beloved, so wonderful, so glorious, so mysterious is your name because the moment I utter your name, you appear within me. Nobody in the world can believe that this is the truth, that God has been waiting for us, and keeps waiting for us to call Him.

ਝੂਠੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਦੁਨੀ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ

jhooth jhooth jhooth jhooth dunee gumaan.

Maharaj Ji says that to be proud of one’s high caste, superior position in the society, recognition, power, wealth, beauty; to be proud of anything which is see-able, that shall perish; to be proud of anything worldly is just ignorance. Because that person does not know the truth, he only knows the falsehood; he is believing the falsehood as the truth.

ਨਗਜ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ

nagaj tayray banday deedaar apaar.

So, so precious are your devotees, and to behold them is most wonderful and beautiful. You can feel their inner peace, their inner stillness, their noble insides, and just to behold them is to be so fortunate.

Please stay there.

There is a letter from Australia. The writer says: Dear Baba Ji, I become provoked easily and become angry. Then I feel like stinging others. I must admit that I do not attend the holy congregation regularly. Please help me to control my anger.

During the last trip, I believe it was in New Zealand, I spoke in length about anger. Please listen to those diwaans. Anger is not to be controlled. Controlling anger means we have a snake, a very poisonous snake in our pocket, and we keep its head clamped with our fist so it might not bite us. That’s no solution; it’s not to be controlled, it’s to be transformed. As we meditate and move towards our true self, our soul, this anger energy is transformed into compassion energy. Our soul has compassion, not anger. All these emotions are transformed; the energy of attachment, the energy of physical relations gets transformed into ishq, and so on.

There are rules of the Divine; the rules under which He is governing His creation. In Japji Sahib, Maharaj Ji tells us about the Divine laws and staying in His will. 

ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal.

When we follow the wrong inclinations of our emotions, of our mind, then we are going against the rules of the Divine and evil results are produced. Evil results are anger, hatred, jealousy, fighting, and constant effort to get the best for oneself.

Maharaj says anger is the chandaal - the hangman, the executioner; it kills you, makes you lifeless! This friend of ours from Australia has mentioned stinging, like bees sting. But we don’t know his nature. Maharaj Ji says:

ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਅਉਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਜਾਣੈ

tayree kudrat toohai jaaneh a-or na doojaa jaanai.

Only You know Your nature. Only You know Your creation.

The writer has mentioned that he feels like stinging, like the bees. Betay, Maharaj Ji’s creation only heals. All His creation has been created out of ishq. Bees are not just flying around with their stingers out; they actually have unparalleled communal care. When in the hive, they feed the young ones, or the old or sick bees. They feed the queen bees which cannot feed herself. If bees from other colonies come there, they feed them too and love them. During summer, the hot weather, they all fan their wings together and create coolness for everyone. And during the cold season, they cluster together to give warmth to everyone. They care for each other so much, and if and when they have to migrate, they send enough scouts in all directions to go and find where the flowers are. The scouts go in all directions and those who find flowers, they come back and start dancing in front of the hive, in front of all the bees, and the bees know then that they have found flowers. If enough scouts come and bring back the same information; enough scouts are dancing in front of them, then they take the decision to fly there together. Their communal caring, comforting is unparalleled. Sting is their last resort when they feel their life is in danger. Moreover, they never ever use their stings on another bee; the bees from any colony never ever attack their own kind.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ

kudrat kar kai vasi-aa so-ay.

ਵਖਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੋਇ

vakhat veechaaray so bandaa ho-ay.

We have a lot to learn from those little bees whom we may only know for stinging. Man has to learn so much from nature. Maharaj Ji says your people, your devotees are so beautiful.

Ji, without transformation we are going to remain in the clutches of the un-noble, blind, selfish, mind. We must move quickly and enter into the space beyond the mind through meditation, and once you taste that space you would never look back - the space of total serenity, the space of sheer ishq, the space of sheer compassion, humility.

Throughout Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Maharaj Ji is reinforcing this message again and again and again. He says, as long as you remain in the mind and live out of the mind, you are going to be prideful; your pride would be false, you yourself would be false, your thoughts would be impure, your deeds would be impure, while in reality you are not, it is Him.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਖਾਲਕੁ ਖਲਕ ਮਹਿ ਖਲਕ ਵਸੈ ਰਬ ਮਾਹਿ

fareedaa khaalak khalak meh khalak vasai rab maahi.

My Beloved, the whole creation is within Him; space is nothing but God Himself has expanded and created the space. His whole creation is within Him, and He is within His whole creation. He says how can you say this person is bad and this person is good. It’s just Him.

ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੭੫॥

mandaa kis no aakhee-ai jaaN tis bin ko-ee naahi. ||75||

How can you tell anyone that’s not a good person? Can you say this God is not good? God is only one. There is nothing except Him in His creation. He himself has assumed all those different forms.

How beautiful are His words! His words are pure; how pleasant they are to sing, to hear, to feel, while impure thoughts, impure talk carries the odor of ego.

Please come to the heart area.

Dhaarnaa:

ਨਾਲ ਆਉਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਹਵਾਵਾਂ, ਵੇ ਦਿਲ ਬਾਗੇ ਆ ਸੱਜਣਾ

naal aa-oun tayray ishq havaavaaN, vay dil baagay aa sajanaa

Oh my Beloved, please come to the garden of my heart, and with You come the winds of ishq.

Please feel Him at the heart area.

ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਮੰਗਲ ਰੂਪ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਬਚਨ ਅਨੂਪ ਰਸਾਲ

mahaa anand mangal roop tumray bachan anoop rasaal.

He says Gurbani, pure utterances, utterances of the Divine are most blissful (mahaa anand). They are celebratory (mangal roop), they are unique (anoop), and they are so sweet (rasaal).

ਵੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੁੰਨਿਆ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਵਹਿੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ

vay jivayN puni-aa dee raat vahindaa paanee

Your utterances are like flowing water because your utterances keep flowing. Your utterances are like flowing water; water that is running in the totally still night with a full moon in the skies. Your utterances are like that water which is running at night in total peace and the full moon is in the skies. Your utterances are like that!

ਚੰਨ ਰਿਸ਼ਮਾਂ ਬਣਦੀਆਂ ਹਾਣੀ

chan rishmaaN banadee-aaN haanee

Your utterances are like running water in the full moon in the skies, and my consciousness is like the rays of the moon - the moonlight which falls on the running water and flows along with it. My consciousness is like the moonlight falling on that running water, so lovingly, so quietly, so delicately, so passionately. Both of us are so pure, and how private and intense our relationship is.

ਵਾਂਗ ਰਿਸ਼ਮਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਡਿੱਗ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਵੇ ਦਿਲ ਬਾਗੀਂ ਆ ਸੱਜਣਾ

vaaNg rishmaaN maiN dig dig jaavaaN, vay dil baageeN aa sajanaa

As that moonlight falls on the running water effortlessly, so does my consciousness fall without effort. The gravity, the love, the ishq in Your utterances attract my consciousness, and my consciousness falls on Your utterances without any effort because of the attraction of the ishq.

ਨਾਲ ਆਉਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਹਵਾਵਾਂ, ਵੇ ਦਿਲ ਬਾਗੇ ਆ ਸੱਜਣਾ

naal aa-oun tayray ishq havaavaaN, vay dil baagay aa sajanaa

Dhaarnaa (end)

Those who come to know the importance of the True Guru and the holy congregation, only they reach the destination. We do not know anything about the self; the Guru tells us. He tells us why you have been sent on this planet, who you are, and how to recognize yourself. And this thing happens in the holy congregation.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ

jin kinai paa-i-aa saaDhsangtee poorai bhaag bairaag.

He says whosoever recognizes himself, goes to the other side of the mind, there only those who are dwelling in the holy congregation. If we do not come regularly then it’s very risky; it may not happen during this lifetime; it may very well not happen in this lifetime. He says, you yourself cannot go to holy congregation. Only if God is merciful to you, then He opens the doors to you.

ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਸਤਸੰਗੁ ਲਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ਜੀਉ

bin bhaagaa satsang na labhai bin sangat mail bhareejai jee-o.

He says only when you are in the holy congregation, you start becoming pure, and when you are away from it, you start collecting the dust, the dirt, garbage in your consciousness again. You become more and more impure and hence more and more difficult to become pure, and recognize the self.

Now, let’s listen to the lines sent by this love filled soul from the state of Indiana in America. In this letter, she says I never write poems, I only express my innermost desires and dreams.

ਕਦੀ ਸਦਰਾਂ ਲਿੱਖੀਆਂ, ਤੇ ਕਦੀ ਉਡੀਕਾਂ ਲਿੱਖੀਆਂ

kadee sadraaN likhee-aaN, tay kadee udeekaaN likhee-aaN

Oh my Beloved, I have been sending You, you would say poems, but they were in fact my heart felt longings and letters written to You while waiting for You.

ਲਿਖੇ ਕਦੀ ਚਾਅ ਮਨ ਦੇ, ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੂਕਾਂ ਲਿੱਖੀਆਂ

likhay kadee chaa man day, tay kaday dil dee-aaN hookaaN likhee-aaN

Sometimes I wrote to You joyful dreams which I cherish, and other times, I wrote to You deep long sighs of my heart.

ਕਦੇ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਸਿੱਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਪਣੇ ਲਿਖੇ

kaday nainaaN sili-aaN day supnay likhay

Sometimes, I wrote to you the dreams of my watery eyes. The dreams of my watery eyes.

ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਲਾਰੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਚੰਨ ਦੇ

tay kaday laaray likhay mayray chan day

And sometimes I wrote to you about your false promises that you would come this summer but did not come.

ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਡਾਢੀਆਂ ਜਿੱਦੀ ਮਜਬੂਰੀਆਂ ਲਿੱਖੀਆਂ

tay kadee daadhee-aaN jid-dee majbooree-aaN likhee-aaN

And sometimes I wrote very strong stubborn helplessness’ where I was helpless to come.

ਸੌਂਹ ਤੇਰੀ, ਕਰੀਂ ਯਕੀਨ ਚੰਨਾ, ਨਹੀਂ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਮੈਂ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਲਿੱਖੀਆਂ

souNh tayree, kareeN yakeen chan-naa, nahee kaday vee maiN kavitaa likhee-aaN

They were not poems. People would call them poems, but they were the states of my longing, my love for you.

The question before us is whether to remain in this I or not. It is a very simple, clear question. Have we ever been happy with this “I”? “I” means the wrong understanding that I am separate from His creation, while we can never be separated from His creation. We have been created by Him, so are we outside of His creation? But this “I”, our “I” is understanding this; it says yeah the birds and those they are His creation, but not me! I’m somebody big, I’m not a bird! The question is whether to remain in this “I”, or just rebel against it. Rebels are very courageous people. They break away from the system; they break the chains because they just want to be free and that is what this is all about. When God is on our side, when God is sitting within our home, and we do not take advantage of that, then how can we blame anybody else for our pains and sufferings.

Today, my daughter, Olia from Poland, Stephan, Mohabbat, Kate, Richard, David, they all were there in the lobby and they started singing do ghut mad day pi-aa - oh, my Father, please bless me with a couple of sips of the Divine wine, the intoxicant. It was such a beautiful scene, and they were singing like Punjabis, with no accent. I was making sure that they were singing. I was not going to sing this dhaarnaa today but that scene compelled me.

Dhaarnaa:

ਦੋ ਘੁੱਟ ਮੱਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਆ ਵੇ ਬਾਬਲਾ, ਦੋ ਘੁੱਟ ਮੱਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਆ

do ghut mad day pi-aa, vay babalaa, do ghut mad day pi-aa

Oh, my Father, please bless me with a couple of sips of the Divine wine, the intoxicant.

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਗਵਾ…., ਵੇ ਬਾਬਲਾ….,  ਦੋ ਘੁੱਟ ਮੱਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਆ

mayree maiN vaalee hosh noo gavaa…., vay babalaa…., do ghut mad day pi-aa

Kindly please destroy this wrong understanding of mine towards myself that I am not part of His creation. I am part of the whole creation and the whole creation is my family. I am in ishq with them. This cruel, ignorant “I” has been telling me: no you don’t belong to anybody and nobody belongs to you while we all are part of each other. Please make me so deeply intoxicated with ishq that this thought never returns back to me that I am separate from His creation. I am one of them! The feeling is so beautiful; you are mine, and I’m yours.
