Many of you wrote poems but it seems like we lost the purpose of writing the poem. The purpose was not to write a beautiful poem but to search deep within and write the truth. So far, I have not seen this line in any letter that my mind has captured me. Why? Because we were trying to write a beautiful poem; the mind hijacked us. What we needed was the truth, not a beautiful poem. Nothing is more beautiful than the truth; rest is just fake beauty.

A son of mind wrote this poem:

Bewitched

I was blinded by your flowers, and foggy with your lust.

But the void you left within me had my soul just seeing dust.

When you meant the world, my love, I was so desperate with fear

for as long as you were out there, I was scattered far from here.

Digging rocks, my fingers bled,

but through my tears, but through my tears, what is that?

What is in my tears? What is in that water?

A vein of gold just pierced my eye, my love has left a thread.

A network of your gems appeared, your treasures widely spread.

I had forgotten your language, love, I thought that you had fled.

What is this thing where you and I dance, suffering in love.

Where tears and smiles just hug each other, drown under in above.

Now I don’t know myself no more; I walk but I’m not here.

My mind is in the skies, my love, my heart holds you so dear,

Please come closer, and please, oh please, stay.

How beautiful!

Let us please make sure that our insides are totally peaceful, quiet, calm, still, totally still. That can only happen if we are in Him, meaning that our consciousness is surrounded by His thoughts, by His presence.

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.

Maharaj Ji is saying in the very first paurhee of Japji Sahib, that unless you realize your true self, you cannot become quiet; you cannot become peaceful. You would remain in turmoil, you would remain burning within with the fire of lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego. You would remain burning.

satgur sayvi-ai sahaj anandaa.

How does one serve the True Guru? There are two things. Seva is done in love and you serve someone who is higher than you. We get lost in thinking about lofty responses; that’s the field of the mind. Let’s remain grounded; our true self is grounded, our heart is grounded. We should say what we feel; that’s the response I am looking for; whatever we have understood. The whole idea is that we understand deeply what Maharaj Ji is saying otherwise we will remain empty. Seva happens out of love and for someone who is higher than you. Maharaj Ji calls this poojaa (worship) as well.

Maharaj Ji says to obey His command (hukam) should be like worshiping Him. What is hukam?

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.

hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal. ||1||

There is a lot of confusion about these - what is hukam and what is razaa (His will)?

We talked about hukam yesterday. Maharaj Ji says:

ayko naam hukam hai naanak satgur dee-aa bujhaa-ay jee-o.

Hukam is to remember Him, to stay with Him. Why? What is God’s will? What is God’s will and happiness behind this? Why does He like this?

God’s command is not like the command of a person. The command of a person carries with it a threat, that if you do not do this, if you don’t obey me, then you are going to be punished with certain consequences. God’s command is not like man’s command, He’s God, He’s not like some person; He is so infinite, and His command is not like a man’s command. There is no threat that if you don’t obey me then I’m going to stop your breathing, I’m going to stop your heart. He says it’s my command that you remember me and stay with me. It’s God’s command which actually means that this is my loving suggestion. If you don’t do that, that’s your choice. You have the choice; you can remain in the world, that’s fine with me but I’m telling you what life is for. There is a big secret here. Here, God tells us how His kingdom works and under what law does it operate, and that law is ishq. He created us out of ishq, out of ishq He dwells within us, in ishq He uttered Gurbaanee, in ishq He becomes Satuguru, in ishq He shows us the way; His gait is ishq; ishq is how He operates.

satgur kee banee sat saroop hai gurbaanee banee-ai

Maharaj Ji says my utterances are a form of the divine, and His form is ishq. He says that you are ishq; not just the one who does ishq - that’s a step on the way; you are ishq, because we are one! The story is very deep! We have heard on the surface that we are here to meet God, merge with God and so on, but please understand the real story. Some say that they don’t feel the need to meet God; there are many people in the world who are not walking this path; they may not verbalize this but that’s what their actions suggest. A while ago I asked the question, why are we walking this path? A sangat met me later and said it’s because I cannot make do without it. How beautiful! The people in the world say we can make do without Him but then there are those who can’t make do without Him.

Please focus at the heart.

satgur sayvi-ai sahaj anandaa.

We are not going to become ishq right away. The story starts with gaavee-ai suni-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o, calling Him with love, humility, and gratefulness. We may not utter the word Waheguru, but the state of our consciousness needs to be full of love, humility, gratefulness, and in that state when we remember Him, He reveals Himself. He says you won’t realize this but I just put love, humility, and gratefulness in your consciousness. He doesn’t say this because He does not want credit unlike worldly people; He is God.

satgur sayvi-ai sahaj anandaa.

Maharaj Ji says remember the Divine; that remembrance should be full of worship (poojaa). Remember Him with a silent inside, with love, and your inside is going to be filled with bliss.

hirdai aa-ay vuthaa govindaa.

He says remember God, worship Him so lovingly, so humbly; He would come and start dwelling in your hirdaa.

So, do we understand what is hukam or His command?

Hukam is His loving suggestion. His hukam is for the whole of humanity, but He does not force His command. His command is to do meditation, recognize who you are. What is the point in living a life without even knowing who you are? Can that be a life? But He does not force this on anyone. Hukam is His command to the whole of humanity, but He does not force it. He says it’s my most loving suggestion to you, but the choice is yours.

What is razaa (His will)?

Razaa is when there is happiness in something. There is a couplet by Mirza Ghalib:

ਖੁਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਰ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਇਤਨਾ

khudee ko kar buland itnaa

ki khudaa banday say khud poochhay

bataa tayree razaa ki-aa hai

He says what you truly are, make it so big that God asks you - what do you want?

Razaa means, what does God want in this; what would make Him happy? This false I is nothing but misery. With His grace, we have been blessed with the human body, human consciousness, and with His mercy we can become liberated from this I, and realize our true self. He says it is my razaa, it would make me happy that you recognize your true self.

abhi-aagat ayh na aakhee-ahi jin kai man meh bharam.

There is a class of yogis, they are called abhi-aagat; abhi-aagat  means visitor. They say that we are visitors on this Earth, and we are here to do something meaningful. But Maharaj Ji says that they are not clear about their goal, they have doubts.

If we see ourselves honestly, when we reflect on questions such as why did we receive a human body, all of our answers are different. Why? Because we have not developed a clear understanding yet. Some of us say it’s about meeting God, merging with God, meeting the true self, merging with the true self, and so on. But it is not clear. Maharaj Ji makes it clear for us; He says:

ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਹੋਇ

abhai niranjan param pad taa kaa bheekhak ho-ay.

Maharaj Ji says that my razaa (my will), what pleases me, is for you to be a beggar for becoming the truth, becoming fearless, and reaching the highest state of consciousness. One who becomes a beggar for this at His door is abhi-aagat.

In this line, He took us into the skies and said many things about the highest state of consciousness. But it is still not clear what that state is; it is still not focused at a point. In this next line, He boils it down. He says:

tis kaa bhojan naankaa virlaa paa-ay ko-ay.

He says that the one who begs at His door for that highest state of consciousness, to be fearless, to become the truth, is a rare one, and his or her diet is nothing but ishq with the Divine.

His system, His religion, His law is ishq! He Himself is ishq! His language is ishq!

saachaa saahib saach naa-ay bhaakhi-aa bhaa-o apaar.

bhaakhi-aa means language or speech; bhaa-o means ishq

His language is infinitely ishqful. The language of His kingdom is the language of ishq. There is no room for ego, I, me, mine - just ishq! We have no idea what ishq is; we will talk about that later.

abhai niranjan param pad taa kaa bheekhak ho-ay.

tis kaa bhojan naankaa virlaa paa-ay ko-ay. ||2||

Maharaj Ji says to become fearless like God, to realize your true self; to realize that you really are fearless, to realize that you really are truth; to realize that you are not something small, you are the pinnacle of consciousness - parampad. He says if you are a beggar of this, then we can say that you really understand that you are a visitor on this planet. And if that is the case then your food will be nothing else but ishq for the Divine. Ishq, to recognize the true self.

If we honestly look within us, we will see that somewhere our inside wants to avoid being reborn. Those who can look within will see this. I want to say something with love, especially to the youth. At this age, the consciousness is foggy and cannot think clearly. What the world calls love is not ishq. Ishq cannot be had with a form, with any person.

Maharaj Ji is saying you are ishq. First, we learn how to do ishq with Him, and in doing so we will become ishq one day. So, should we save ourselves from becoming ishq? Does that scare you?

That’s a very subdued, cautious response.

We should talk about what we are feeling inside, and not sweep it under the rug.

Maharaj Ji says you are ishq, and He gives us a hint that ishq cannot be with another. This is so amazing! When Maharaj Ji says, have ishq with me, what does that mean? In reality, there is only One - the bubble and ocean are the same! The ocean tells the bubble, have ishq with me. Both the bubble and ocean are water. So, what happened? You ishq with yourself! First the bubble does ishq with the ocean but it is ishq’s nature that it finishes the one who is doing ishq; the ocean destroys the bubble. This is where we get scared! The bubble gets dissolved in the ocean, becomes One, becomes the Ocean. What was happening? Ishq was doing ishq to itself; God plays with Himself, outside as in the ocean, and even within us; He plays with Himself.

Maharaj Ji says it’s all Him.

In the end, that’s what it turns out to be - that God does ishq with Himself. There is no other! As we become closer to our true self, there is no I, or me, or mine; just being.

His will is that we recognize our true self. It is later on that we will turn out to be ishq. He says recognize your true self; you are God! But what is God? God is ishq! It is difficult to grasp this. When we think about God, we have thoughts about how He created this universe, how He is operating everything, how he sees everything, and so on. The question was so simple but we went in a different direction. It is as if someone asks what water is, and we respond by saying that water is used to wash clothes, grow crops, take a shower, make tea, and so on. But what should have been the answer - that water is a combination of two gases, oxygen and hydrogen. When we are faced with the question - what is God? God is ishq! That’s it!

See what God’s will is and what kind of will we have and what it leads to - zero results!

The whole idea behind these meetings is to make sure that we understand what the game is, how it is played, what is there at the end of the line, and who wins the game.

Who will win?

man jeetai jag jeet.

Maharaj Ji says either you or the mind will win. If your mind wins, you will end up as nothing and go back empty handed. If you win, then you would be rewarded with ishq; that is you, the highest state of human consciousness. The highest state of human consciousness is to recognize that I am ishq!

Dhaarnaa:

vaykh sajanaaN dee kayhee khushnoodee, tay kithay maa-ay aapaaN firday

Oh my mother, see what plans my Beloved has for me, and see what plans our minds have for us.
